Romans 15:13- Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
The year is drawing to a conclusion. There is a lot of festivity around. As Christians and grateful human beings we reflect on the goodness of God on our lives. Our approach and attitude to the festive season is deeper. It goes beyond the traditional social congregation and the exchange of presents. Our understanding and reference to the festive season is not based on adverts, television or the print media. Also, our impression of the outgoing year, and perception of the festivities are based on God’s word.
Our reflection is two-fold. Psalm 103 is a representation of our reflection on the year. We express our gratitude to God, blessing God from the depths of our souls. In reflecting on the festive season we thank God for what He has done to achieve the eternal salvation of our souls. Everything is in the perspective of the Christian’s perpetual follower-ship of God and eternal destination.
In the exhortation from Romans 15:13 (Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost) , Paul was reverting to quote a prophesy from Isaiah. [ Isaiah 11 verses 1 and 10, and verses 2-9.] The prophesy was of a perfect man, with a perfect attitude, perfect understanding, perfect knowledge, perfect record, perfect righteousness, with perfect solutions to every problem, and with the power to bring about a perfect situation. He is the perfect hope for not only the believer but also for the entire humanity. No wonder the sudden appearance of surprising language at the latter end of a prophetic paragraph-Isaiah 9.1-7- when ‘unto us a child was born’!
This is relevant in case you have not had an entirely perfect year in any aspect of your life: education, health, work, job, expectations, goals, aspirations, financially. Or if you have been less than enthused by politics, status quo, rules and regulations, unfair or unholy policies, imperfect relationships!
Unto us a child is born, child given……
Let your hope be in the power and abilities of the Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, The everlasting Father, Prince of peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
In effect it is essential to put things in perspective, and understand that REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE OUTGOING YEAR HAS BEEN LIKE, OR HOW OUR PERCEPTION OF THIS FESTIVE PERIOD HAS SHAPED OUT God is with us always (like He promised), and wants to continue to work in our lives through His Holy Spirit; so we can continue to be joyful and live in abundance of peace, as we strive for Him to achieve His plans.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
