May God be your sun and shield….

By Dr. Abayomi Sanusi –
For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.-Psalm 84.11
As winter again slowly approaches, and the heat of the sun feels scarcely adequate to keep us warm let us be reminded of some enduring and heart warming facts regarding our christian faith.
The sun is a powerful symbol and effective sustainer of life. It is a source of energy and warmth, providing nourishment, light and affecting every aspect of our being.
[In testament to the influential nature of the sun; spare a thought in remembrance of the first appearance of spring, the cheer and various celebrations that unfailingly erupt. Spring  itself is akin to movement, vitality, development and life]
Let’s hypothetically imagine what the earth would be in 2014 without the sun: a dark, cold place that would gradually run out of drinkable water, edible food, plant, laughter, and recreation. It would slowly turn into a place of misery, hardship, fear and darkness. A place devoid of life as God intended it.
The Lord God is a metaphorical sun?
The sun represents warmth, provision, care, love, continuity, the goodness of God upon His creatures. No wonder the earth was shapeless, empty and dark until God lovingly created light, and reassured that it was good! (Genesis 1.1-4)
To the Christian today the symbol of the sun should remind us of at least four essential aspect of life in the modern world today, that people knowingly or unknowingly have to contend with.
These are Physical Comfort, Financial Security, Emotional Reassurance, and Spiritual Settlement
What the scriptures specifically say… As children of God we have an ‘unfair’ advantage with regard to enjoying the full benefit of
God’s work; deriving the full extent of His grace, glory, provision and companionship.
Psalm 84.11.
Like King David we can have full confidence in God’s promises and physical abilities. We can declare like him in Psalm 27.1: The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD [is] the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? The benefit of being
in His presence, of answers to our prayers and of following His lead physically protects us from sundry danger, suffering and peril.
Our physical safety shall manifest spiritually, and the collective and individual promises in our lives shall be fulfilled.[Contemplate on Isaiah 60.1-2]
Isaiah 60.19: The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. We will prosper spiritually and this will manifest in the physical, although like
the world never fully understood Jesus they may not completely grasp the reason, logic or understanding of our triumphs. John 1.4-5 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
As we love Him with our entire hearts, minds, soul and worship him in reverence we become emotionally attached to God. As a bride or wife’s affection is perpetually to her  husband our love and reverence for Him will grow. We will benefit from reverencing His
holy name. Malachi 4.2: But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness  arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. He will be our strength, shield and fortress:
Psalm 3.3- But thou, O LORD, [art] a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head
Psalm 119.114- Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
Finally when we make it to the new Jerusalem, Jesus himself physically symbolising the  sacrifice he aid will be our light and brightness.  Let God be your sun and shield. For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing
will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.-Psalm 84.11
Regardless of the phase of life you are going through, your current physical location, or your status according to the standards of men; decide to make our Everlasting Father, your sun and shield.
Physical comfort may sometimes feel inadequate. For various reasons financial matters  and may fluctuate. We have confidence according to His promises. Our God will ensure that no good thing is withheld from us. We have to continue to walk uprightly (as Jesus would physically conduct himself in this society today). The reassurance is emotional and spiritual satisfaction that regardless of everything the future holds it is already well with us forevermore. The first step is yielding fully to God, and giving the entirety of your life to  Him.
